At first, Sammy, his older friend Stokesie, and McMahon the butcher all look at the girls lustfully. But of them all, only Sammy enjoys the entertainment the girls bring. The other shoppers crash their carts, look stunned, and are suddenly jarred out of their everyday routine. Sammy, who seems bored with his job, finds the change amusing. He even begins to feel sorry for the girls when everyone else stares at them lustfully.
According to him, she has a queen-like presence. She is a leader, not a follower. She does not require any character development. Almost all of the information about Queenie comes from Sammy, the narrator of the story, who describes his first sight of her.
At the end of the story, Sammy has another epiphany, this time of a more visceral kind. An epiphany is supposed to be a moment of illumination from above, but Sammy feels this epiphany in his stomach, as he realizes how hard the world is going to be.
Sammy has just quit his job to take a stand against no-bathing-suit policies everywhere. This sentence leaves room for lots of different interpretations. He was highly interested in Queenie because he wanted to live her lifestyle.
Probably just shows how much they really cared. Janie laughs it off but is secretly mad at Joe for not even let her have a chance to say anything. Later on the page, though, Joe tells Janie that she has to work in the store which contradicts what he said about how women should. All that she had done was make one bad meal and he hit her like she did something very bad. In the story, Queenie is portrayed to be a rebellious and seductive teenage girl that enraptures the attention of most of the male workers, however she herself represents much more than that.
She continues to walk confidently, indicating that she knows that she is attractive and wants to be watched. In Genesis 3 of the Old…. In the story, Sammy quits his job for 3 girls he has just met. Sammy has low intellectual ability which played a part in him quitting his job. He works at a grocery store, this is not the most challenging job.
He spends his time judging everyone inside of his head as they go about their day inside of the story. There are some obvious reasons why Sammy might feel that the world was going to be hard for him after he walked off his job. The fact that he has walked off the job without giving any notice whatever will be a black mark on his record.
Getting up to the level of a checkout…. Sammy is a dynamic character because he changes in the course of the story. After he quits, he realizes that his gallant actions have been lost on Queenie and that no one understands his chivalry. This greatly affects the plot and theme of the story.
Sammy is a biased narrator because he is infatuated with the girls. The story is told in first person omniscient point of view. Calling them sheep shows his contempt for them but also helps him distinguish between them and the girls he admires, Queenie and her friends.
Sammy and the girls in bathing suits represent a rebellion against this conformism. He is amazed because they have nothing on except 2 piece bathing suits. Then the manager Lengel comes out and yells at the chicks because they are under-dressed. They argue and the girls tell him they are there for one thing herrings. Finally the girls check out and leave. Plus, he is quite fed up already with his job, his manager, and everything around him.
