Can you frontline a hedgehog

Johnson's do ear mite drops and these will get any out of the ears. If the maggots are in the eyes, mouth, anus or genitals then they will need to be flushed out with saline, you may find it helpful to get your vet to do it for you as the animal will need an Ivomec injection to kill off any stragglers. You cannot wait while you work out how to uncurl the hog. Get it sorted fast and if you can't do it, find somebody who can.

There is currently no cure for this. Rehydration Fluids - If you do not have ready prepared oral fluids such as Lectade, you can make your own using 1 level Tablespoon of sugar, 1 level teaspoon of salt and dissolve in a litre of warm water. This should be given by syringe very slowly.

Do not have the hog on its back during this procedure or it may inhale the fluids and drown. Subcutaneous Fluids - Are injected under the skin.

The fluids are dispensed from a sterile bag. Under no circumstances attempt to do this yourself until you have been shown how to do it properly. The information above is based on the experience of Hedgehog Bottom and is current as at March but may be subject to change as new methods are discovered.

We care for native wild hedgehogs. Occasionally we get African Pygmy Hogs, bred for the pet market and dumped by the owners. These animals are an entirely different species and need to be treated as such, they cannot survive in the wild. If you are thinking of getting one, please watch this US infovid first. It is illegal to take one of our native hogs from the wild to keep as a pet. It is illegal to throw a pet hog out into the wild. In need of help? Secure the hedgehog in a DEEP box or cat basket.

Quick Diagnosis Hedgehogs get more things wrong with them than just about any other animal. First and foremost. Unless you are prepared for a lot of sleepless nights you may wish to pass these to an expert until they are big enough to fend for themselves Wobbling or falling over 1 Dehydration or infection.

The images on the left show a healthy hog and a malnourished one. Typical veterinary treatment for ticks is Frontline spray Fipronil 0.

This product is licensed for treatment and prevention of flea infestation with cats and dogs, and for the treatment and control of ticks in dogs, and is generally accepted as a safe treatment for flea and tick infestation in hedgehogs. However, hedgehogs, especially those experiencing breathing difficulties, appear to be particularly susceptible to sprayed substances, and their condition often appears to worsen following treatment.

Possibly, the tendency of the hedgehog to curl up into a ball increases the amount of insecticide inhaled. This would seem to suggest that insecticides might have different effects on different species. I would suggest that the treatment of tick infestation in hedgehogs with medication licensed for use only with dogs and cats be avoided.

In addition, Frontline does not always kill all the ticks. As each tick removes a considerable amount of blood from a hedgehog it is paramount that they are removed as soon as possible from any animal presenting for treatment to help prevent anaemia. Another reason for speedy removal of ticks is that they transmit disease, in particular those caused by viruses.

Method and Materials An effective, but harmless, method for removing ticks from a hedgehog is to simply pour an oil, suitable for use with human babies, as close as possible to the head of the tick s. The breathing holes of the tick are situated close to its mouth parts and a layer of oil blocks them immediately, ensuring death shortly afterwards.

The ticks that fail to fall off can then be removed carefully using forceps. Results I have used this method on countless occasions and have found it to be totally effective in ensuring removal of the tick Ixodes hexagonus. The use of oil is also preferable when removal of ticks by forceps is not practicable owing to either the small size of the ticks or their position on the body of the hedgehog, that is, vulnerable areas such as the eyes.

An alternative to oil used on the skin of human babies is diluted lavender oil. This has the added advantage of encouraging fleas Archaeopsylla erinacei to leave the hedgehog, where overburdening with fleas is a problem.

However, care must be taken if it means that fleas leaving one infested hedgehog are able to immediately infest other animals receiving care in the vicinity. Conclusion This technique for speedy and safe removal of the hedgehog tick Ixodes hexagonus is highly recommended as it is effective, non - toxic, time - saving and, most importantly, kinder to the hedgehog. It keeps stress to a minimum while at the same time preventing further loss of blood, with subsequent anaemia, from an animal already weakened due to disease or injury.

Acknowledgements I would like to express thanks to Dr. Do not generally cause a problem to the hog unless it is really poorly and anaemic. Fleas can be killed with pyrethrum flea powder anything safe for cagebirds is safe for hogs. Ticks can be left till they fall off, unless there are loads of them. If you try to pull them off and leave their mouthparts in the hog, the site can go septic, to remove them, use tweezers or a tick remover and use a twisting action.

Ivomec helps. You can use Stronghold Puppy or kitten or Ivomec spot on for mange mites and ear mites. Ivomec spot on Noromectin 0. Bath the hog to soften the scabs. Repeat bath after 5 days - may need to repeat again for 3rd time. Leave a 5 day gap between baths and Imaverol. If Ringworm is found takes 12 days to culture get Imaverol from vets and give 4 baths at 3 day intervals 10ml per ml water see packet If you want to check if it is clear wait 10 days then get culture done again, then wait another 12 days for result.

We have stopped getting cultures done now we are more familiar with ringworm symptoms, but would do it in severe cases to check if mites and ringworm are both present. Imaverol can also be sprayed onto patches of ringworm - diluted as per instructions on the box with warm water. Hedgehogs fall into or get trapped in all sorts of things, either dry or with water in them!

They get trapped in sheds, garages, trenches, drains, under oil tanks, ponds, pools etc etc. So they can be emaciated and starving and dehydrated or waterlogged and cold. Check claws to see how short they are if they have been trapped somewhere hard, if they wear their claws down too far the nailbeds can become infected and will need treating with antibiotic and possibly even removal if badly infected.

They may also need antibiotic if they have fallen into untreated water - especially filthy drain water, depending on how long they have been there and how bad they are. They may have taken in a lot of water and so their weight may drop dramatically for the first few days, we keep them in care until their weight has stabilised and they seem to have fully recovered.

You will probably worm it as well but see if it's necessary. Ligatures - NETTING - hogs caught in nets can have nasty injuries, wire, string, plastic rings etc, can all get twisted round limbs or bodies - the blood supply can be cut off , so be very sure that it is all removed and even if there is no obvious sign of injury keep for observation for 48 hrs, in case of internal injury, unless it is a large female in the breeding season and she looks completely unhurt with no swelling anywhere.

Bathe in WARM water as cold water will shut circulation down. Vitamin K can be given for rat poisoning or if the hog passes blood 0. This is what slug pellet poo looks like: the hog died shortly after passing this turquoise mess.. To wash off oil or tar, use liquid paraffin and then wash well well! Lime poisoning wash in water with a bit of vinegar and give liquid charcoal by mouth.

As you weigh them for the first time The big one can become the little one overnight!! Only feed it solid food if it looks like a miniature adult hedgehog - if it has teeth just emerging it will be on the point of weaning, so may only need hand feeding for a few days to get it started eating soft or ground food for itself. If you can feel teeth then try it with glop if it is furry on its tummy.

If it is younger than this, it will need hand feeding with Esbilac or similar milk replacer. Babies often die if they are not stimulated to pass urine and faeces, if the tummy is not furry, and the hoglet lies in your hand with its back legs splayed or can be made to splay them when you tickle its genitals with a pad of damp cotton wool, then it still needs toileting.

Do this at every feed. Keep babies warm on a heat pad at all times even when feeding. Esbilac is made up with hot water 2 parts Esbilac to one part water and add Abidec vits, one drop per baby in the litter per 24 hrs. Probiotic powder can be added to the feed. Royal Canin baby cat or baby dog milk is also fine to use for hoglets, see which yours prefer.

When they are very new feed 2 hrly, but get onto 3 hrly as soon as you can, and continue 3 hrly feeds until their eyes open at 14 days , then you can feed every 4 hours, gradually missing out the night time feed! Depends on how they are doing…..

Start weaning when you feel teeth emerge at about 3 weeks, but continue hand feeds until at least 4 weeks when they have enough teeth to feed themselves. Use a different syringe for hand feeding each hog or litter, it is OK to use the same syringe for littermates who are housed together. Disinfect after use and rinse well. They seem to love Royal Canin Mother and Babycat. If she aborts - take to vets for scan and oxytocin jab 0.

PREGNANCY: Any adult female may be pregnant anytime from May to October, if she is in care and suddenly goes off her food, becomes active and makes a nest of all her bedding, she may be about to give birth, so take extra care when cleaning her out!!

If there are babies, then take care not to touch them and put Mum and everyone back in the nest box together and leave well alone!

She may not feed for 48 hrs after giving birth. They move the babies to a new nest, so provide a second box in plenty of time on about day All hogs inside are cleaned out every day.

If they have not soiled the hutch you may not need to disinfect it, just replace all the newspaper on the floor and give it new bedding in its nest box, newspaper sheet underneath and shredded newspaper for nest material. You may need to replace the cardboard box or bag every day or even more frequently, depending on how dirty the patient is. Hedgehog bellies are covered with soft fur but their sides and backs are covered with stiff quills. However, try to avoid getting your fingers trapped by a hedgehog rolling into a ball as they are strong and being squeezed and poked at the same time is sure to be painful for you!

Are Hedgehogs meant to be out in the daylight? Not usually no. Hedgehogs can roam an average distance of 2km on a single night. Male hedgehogs in the breeding season can cover up to 3km in one night in their search of females! Rabies has not been reported in wild or captive African hedgehogs, although the salivation that occurs during self-anointing behavior may be mistaken as a sign of rabies. Although relatively easy to raise and take care of, like most animals, pet hedgehogs need to be cared for properly in order to remain healthy and happy.

Hedgehogs do not recognize their names like dogs and cats do. They will even respond to different names as long as your voice is familiar to them. Hedgehogs got their name from the way they search for food in hedges and snort. The simple fact is, humans love hedgehogs. Fruits: Dried fruit should be avoided, but a small amount of fresh fruit can be offered to your hedgehog as treats. Apples, bananas, berries, and melons are popular choices among hedgehogs.

Vegetables: Fresh tomatoes, fresh green beans, and cooked squash are some options that your hedgehog may enjoy. Skip to content Can I keep a hedgehog in my garden?
