Last on. Remember me. Previous Share Flag Next. I love Sebastian Faulks, and he is one of my favourite modern authors. I still vividly remember when I read Birdsong for the first time. For me, there is a slow start, as I was not that gripped by the affair, but as soon as it got to the trenches the book came alive for me.
The way it describes the experience of war for a soldier, the camaraderie, strong friendships and the ties that bind, along with the horror, brutality and futility of war, just took hold of me and gripped me and I could not put the book down. Everything's fine. None of us needs to dig a really claustrophobic tunnel under the Somme today and inadvertently die choking to death on soil alongside 20 of our screaming friends. We're not in Birdsong. Let's just be thankful.
Just like Wraysford and Firebrace, we all have our important battles. Grace Dent: Birdsong.
