Beef Filling 1. Preheat oven to degrees Fahrenheit. In a large bowl, add the flour, curry and salt and sugar and mix. Using a pastry blender or fork, cut in the cold butter and shortening. Keep blending in the butter it resembles the size of small peas. Add the water and stir until flour turns into a ball. Form a ball of dough using your hands. The dough should be sticky but not too sticky.

Place the dough into a large glass bowl and dust lightly with flour. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes. Cut the pastry into 8 equal parts.

Flatten into a 6 inch circle. Use a bowl to make perfect round circles. Beef Filling In a large skillet over medium heat add 1 tablespoon of o vegetable oil. Saute the onions until softened about minutes.

Add the garlic. Cook until garlic is fragrant. Set stove to medium-high heat. Add equal amounts of the beef filling to the half side of each circle of dough, leaving some room free around the edges. Brush egg wash around the edges of the flattened dough.

The first time I had to cut in the butter with knives because I forgot our blender had a food processor attachment!

Last night had the addition of some leftover potatoes which ended up disappearing into the beef but making the juices into a thick sauce. Made these tonight, big hit. Made them with ground chicken because that was what we had in the fridge. Adjusted the spices to be able to share with friends that prefer things a little less spicy.

The pastry is super easy, super flaky. Will definitely make again. Love the shell of this patty. I added one habanero without seeding it and it turned out a little too spicy for me.

When rolling out the dough, I found portioning the dough into 18 balls before rolling it out to be easier and more consistent than the method stated in the recipe. Excellent recipe, filling flavorful, slight spice, and delicious. Will definitely be making this one again.

The real version. I can't leave a bad review as the recipe is in itself tasty, but i do want to say that this is an empanada style rendition of a patty. Jamaican beef patty's use lard or suet in the crust and is folded in to create a much more flaky texture. Furthermore the meat is typically of a more blended consistency and will not fall out in large chunks as seen in the image above.

Again this recipe is tasty as is, but i feel it is important to make the distinction that a jamaican beef patty bought from a bakery on the streets of jamaica will not come out the same as this due to the nuances listed above.

I would have liked the filling a little spicier, so would probably add another habanero next time, but that's completely dependent on the peppers you can get. I'm not sure how you can simmer off a full cup of liquid in minutes. I ended up at probably twice that, but may have erred on the dry side to avoid a soggy filling.

Overall, a great dinner that I'll make again. Newfoundland, Canada. But trust me, the end results will be worth it. Firstly, combine all the ingredients to make the dough. Wrap it in a piece of plastic wrap and put away in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Secondly, season the lean ground beef with the onion powder, allspice, black pepper, ground ginger, garlic powder and complete seasoning. Set aside for a little.

Add the seasoned lean ground beef, cook until all the pink is gone. Then add the soya sauce and browning. Continue to stir. Fourthly, add the breadcrumbs, curry powder, dried thyme or fresh thyme , ketchup, salt, brown sugar and water.

Then stir and cover with a lid to cook for about 10 minutes on low heat. Set aside to cool. Fifthly, remove the dough from the fridge and cut it into two pieces.

Cut out circles that are about 5 to 6 inches. Then scoop about 2 to 3 heaping tablespoons onto each circle. Dip your finger into some water and slightly moisten the edges of each circle. Then fold each circle in half and use a fork to crimp the edges. Finally, brush each patty with some egg wash and bake at degrees Fahrenheit for 25 to 30 minutes. Repeat the same process for the second piece of dough.

Egg wash the first set and then bake all of them in one baking time frame. Yes you can freeze these Spicy Jamaican Beef Patties. First, bake them as instructed in the recipe below and allow them to cool room temperature.

Then place them on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze. Once they are frozen, place them in a freezer friendly container to freeze for about 3 months. To reheat : place frozen patties on a baking sheet in the oven at degrees Fahrenheit for about 20 minutes or until it is warm enough to your desire.

We have not had any luck With other recipies being flavorful or having The right texture. Yours was fabulous! I took the lazy route and used Store bought pie crust, and used vegetarian impossible beef but otherwise followed your directions.
